本作中、特にストーリー後半では登場人物が次々と死んでいく壮絶極まる展開になり、最終的には敵味方問わず全滅する。その理由としては、作劇演出以外にも、声優のギャラを抑えるためにスポンサーサイドから登場人物を殺すように要求があったと富野が自著の中で述べている。この背景としては、ちょうどイデオンの放送中に声優たちがギャラアップを求める運動・デモを展開した事がある。この運動は成功し、声優たちのギャラは数倍に跳ね上がったが、制作サイドの予算はさして変わらず、当初の構想そのままの大勢のレギュラーを起用し続けるのが事実上不可能になった。

製作期間中の富野へは、上層部やスポンサーから声優の人件費抑制を目的に「ギジェを殺して下さい」「シェリルも殺していいのでは」「なんでハルルはまだ生きてるんです?ダラムと心中させてしまえば良かったのに」「ズオウのようにしゃべらないキャラクターをもっと作ればいい」等、劇作都合お構いなしのキャラ殺害要求が、再三再四怒涛の如く押し寄せ、流石の富野もこれには精神的に堪えたとのことである。
